What is SANI ?

Heterotrophic Sulfate reduction, Autotrophic denitrification and Nitrification Integrated (SANI)”, developed by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), is a patented process for treatment of wastewater containing organic sulfur compounds or sulfate from municipal and industrial sectors.  


The SANI process has demonstrated huge competitive advantages over conventional biological nutrient removal process in municipal sectors:

  • 60 – 70 % Biological sludge reduction 

  • 30 – 40 % Plant footprint saving

  • 10 – 20 % CO2 emission reduction
